She's pinned down. She's got broken ribs. A constriction on her throat is cutting through her flesh and cutting off her air. Things are looking to be about as grim as grim can get, and this isn't the first time she's been caught up in a deadly and tragic situation. Christina McIntyre has done some killing, done some running and she's gone to great lengths to put as much of the desert war behind her as she can. And, before that war, there was another one to run from. Another one she lived through, even though it rocked her adolescence and fractured her soul. Before she became Specialist Christina "Mack" McIntyre, and a veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Chris had already been a soldier through her childhood, struggling to survive physically and emotionally, at least long enough to grow up. Against all odds, she made it, and she kept on surviving by walling up access to herself, keeping the hurts and horrors of her past a secret. She's been closed. Sometimes curt. Frequently difficult. Most folks have kept their distance ... save one special someone. Captain Erin Grayson Mathis is Chris McIntyre's long-lost best friend. They've been in dire straits together. They've seen some stuff. Good stuff, and very, very bad stuff. Stuff that can spin the mind, bend reality and break the heart. For a crucial few months, Chris and Erin were key members of a med-vac unit, Colonel Benjamin Connelly's wild card -- 101st Airborne. Their Huey, named "Ticket" (short for Two Tickets To Paradise), had come all the way from Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska to carry help to the injured then fly them out of harm's way in the desert heat. But, Chris and Erin aren't in the desert anymore. They won't be hearing Ticket's blades, whump-whump-whumping over the mountains to save them. This time, they're stuck with no heat, in the frigid Colorado winter, in a tiny cabin, high in the Rocky mountains. Their enemies aren't followers of Saddam Hussein. They're American fugitives, bent on revenge. The bad news is, the situation is dire and death seems eminent for at least one of them ... probably both of them. The good news is, Erin wasn't only selected to be Lt. Connelly's wild card. She was also secretly assigned to be a wild card for Chris, specially requested, designed and deployed by a Higher Authority -- one that even the brilliant and brave Lt. Connelly willingly serves and answers to. What her revenge-frenzied captors don't realize is, Erin is a veteran of another war. She's well trained and fully equipped with weapons that can't be seen and are ultimately superior in every way to those her enemies are using. Gentle-natured, steady-on Erin, wife, nurse and pregnant-mama-to-be is armed to the teeth with a Force to be reckoned with. She's bound, but she's praying. God is listening and He don't like ugly ... Holy fireworks are about to light up the mountain in an amazing display of heroics and deliverance that their enemies can't imagine, let alone see coming. Wounded Healer is Book One of the Homeland Heroes series by Donna Fleisher. To say Donna Fleisher's story is fantastic would be a huge-whoppin' understatement. It's well past that. Her writing style is unique, fresh and she takes a good bit of artistic license in the presentation, not always following the rules and blended it together so well, she hammered a home run with it, and sent it sailing right outta the park. I can't wait to read the rest of the series and whatever else she's written. From the opening pages of the book, I was hooked. The first words I read were of the author's designation of the Homeland Series being "dedicated to all U.S. military veterans of all branches who served in times of peace and war" and to their families and those "waiting for their loved ones" to return. Donna is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, like her Dad and her brother. Her intimate familiarity with military service is woven consistently throughout this story. Every bit of this book is worth reading, from the dedications to the notes on the front and back cover. I also highly recommend getting better acquainted with her via her website at donnafleisher.com. This is a soul-penetrating story that is free of adult language, and that I can enthusiastically recommend for any young-adult reader and up. It'll make a fantastic gift to someone, and to yourself too! Finish Line!
