femmeflashpoint: Stop Digging - I've Found Your Treasure!

Do you like treasure hunting?

Is your style to go digging around in the back yard for loot, or do you prefer to explore a ruin, hoping to find some long-forgotten special-something hidden there, just waiting to be found, cleaned up and admired?

Some folks hunt for treasure in the malls, or musty-dusty antique stores. (I'm fond of those myself; not the malls but the antique stores.) Some like hunting in the aisles and nooks of those wonderful shops that allow them to sip exotic coffee blends while browsing their way along shelves, sliding their fingers across row after row of book spines, searching for that magic title that speaks to their heart, saying, "I'm the one! Read me!"

All of those methods are loads of fun, but there's a world's worth of fascinating stuff to discover, and you know how it is -- we live on a huge planet and we've only got one lifetime to spend exploring it.

Meet Roy & Kim, your treasure hunters!

Roy and Kim Thompson of RK Treasure Center

Roy and Kim Thompson of RK Treasure Center are the sort of folks everyone should be acquainted with that has the desire to support good people owning and operating small businesses.

In fact, describing Roy and Kim as good people is a gross understatement. They're great people and some of the kindest folks I know in both my personal and professional circles.

"The ebay business was mine (Roy). I have always loved buying and selling. I think Kim wasn't quite sure what to think once she found out about me being a salesman deep down, since I was in the Army when we met and have spent the last 15 years as a correctional officer.

"There have been times where we traveled to gun shows, selling hobby tools or set up at our local flea market. Kim had 18 years of nursing behind her and was having the responsibility of taking care of her parents. The perfect solution was to build a home business in which she could be home, have more free time, and also work on a supplement to my retirement in 6 years. We started our eBay business about three years ago.

"We started storing the treasures we had acquired through the years in our home, which like many, was stored in boxes. Eventually, we realized we just had too much stuff. With the proceeds of selling those items, we began to seek out suppliers and buy other stock.

"Before buying I had to research what amount the items sold for and if they were selling. This takes up quite abit of time,so we were moving along at a snail's pace, but still making some money.

"We put all our proceeds back into the business, minus a few times where we may have filled our gas tanks or splurged on a night out. I believe in variety, since you never know what will spark an interest, so our inventory items vary from hobby tools, gun cleaning supplies, to camping supplies. We try to add one or two new items per month.

"There have been times we've bought an item that didn't sell well so we've had to make decisions to stop carrying it. It's also possible to receive bad reviews on a product that was poor quality. We always back our customer offering a 100 % money back guarantee. 

"We do consignment, as well, but when we do, it depends on if we're able to store the items and if they're marketable. We don't want to waste our time or our clients' time if the item doesn't have the potential to sell.

"Each year we've set a goal for ourselves and by the grace of God we are happy to say we have met each goal. Our main focus is to keep an honest company that will meet the needs of our customers in a timely manner. We want to grow and obtain more items to sell as time and money permits and in the long run, we want our business to be the primary support for us in our senior years."

Advice for potential entrepreneurs ...

"The most valuable advice we can folks regarding starting their own business of this sort is to start small with dreams of growth, using items from your home by selling things you no longer need or want. Put as much money as you can back into the business. Read and research all you can on what is trending out there and learn the eBay so that you can be proficient in your online store.

"There is much to learn and it is not just an overnight adventure in owning a store and keeping it up. We work hard, seven days a week to keep it going, but it's worth it because it's ours. That means we have control over the hours we keep, and the amount of time we put into it. Like anything, the more you put into it, the better it will be."

How it is being the dynamic duo ... 

"We can honestly say this venture is a joint effort. Not only have we been married for the last 23 years, but we are now business partners who respect each other for the work each one provides.

"Because I work full time, I really depend on Kim to package and ship. I spend time on my days off researching and posting. We work very well together and are always bouncing ideas off one another.

"Just recently we closed the store down for the first time and went on a vacation, and of course, we were both scared that it would send our potential customers in other directions, but we were pleasantly surprised to find them waiting at our virtual door when we got back.

"Sometimes I look over Kim's shoulder when she is packing, and in the zone , and she lets me know quickly she has it under control. I am rather a turtle in that department, so that's her contribution.  She finds no joy in posting or research but she can package quickly and then move on to other things. 

"We have our strengths in different areas and have found our own niche which keeps our little business running smoothly."
