Deputy Sheriff Reed Shelton and his wife Rebecca (Beck) are on foot, hiking into the remote Idaho wilderness. They've parked their SUV, donned their backpacks and survival gear, and are making their way through the forest to meet up with their best friends, Dr. Michael Capella (Cap) and his wife Sing. Their intent is to enjoy a weekend with friends while they're tutored by a Native American instructor who specializes in survivalist training. They'll be without electricity and the only running water they'll have access to will be what's flowing through Lost Creek, near their cabin, which takes minimalist interiors to an extreme. Unknown to both couples and their teacher, they're about to intersect with a trail of violence that's winding its way through the same forest. Kills are being committed in a method that suggests a viciousness birthed in frustration and fury. The question is ... what is doing the killing? A local pro-tracker insists it's a bear. Others, familiar with animal kills, are wondering when bears started picking up a heavy meal and running away with it, rather than dragging it along on the ground or just eating it at the kill site. The signs and clues are making sense, but in a way that no one wants to acknowledge. The puzzle pieces refuse to bring into focus the picture they're demanding them to produce. Instead they keep coalescing into another scenario entirely. If those on the hunt for the killer don't accept the signs for what they are soon, they'll keep tracking the wrong animals and the death count will continue to rise. Those responsible will go free and keep perpetuating the lie they're desperately pressing for all society to believe. Missing ... The search continues for one victim. Teams of professionals are combing the forest for signs of her whereabouts. The search party is experiencing some intense division in thought and method. Some believe they're looking for a corpse while others insist it's a rescue operation. The more commotion they make the more attention they're attracting from outside the boundaries of the wilderness. It's attention of the sort that's putting them in great danger. As they keep adding to the list of those involved in the search, a second list is being made, denoting them as threats and targets for termination. Both civilians and civil servants are at risk. The list they're populating doesn't acknowledge the boundaries of law -- it exists to serve science and those who control what they want others to believe of it. A favorite re-read!
The characters are real, or you'll at least feel like they are, and some you'll find to be despicable enough to want to jump in and wallop the tar outta them. But, the good guys? Oh my! You're gonna fall in love with them, wanna invite them over for dinner and add them to your Christmas shopping list! Munchies alert! Before you start this read, get prepared! So, break out the snacks and have them ready. There are writers that can pull you into a winter scene effectively enough to make you shiver with cold while standing in the Mohave Desert at noon. Mr. Peretti is one of those. Once I'd been yanked into this story, I found myself getting hungry and thirsty right along with the characters. By the way, after you gather your snacks, you might wanna grab a blanket too. It can get right chilly in the Idaho forest after dark. The finish line! I hope I've snagged your curiosity and inspired you to invest in this book! It's a fantastic read for anyone from young-adults and up. The story is free of foul language and sexual content.
It may also change your habits when preparing for your next camp-out or wilderness hike. (Muahahahahaha!!!!) If you're up for an adventure that can easily rival with those of Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holmes, you'll absolutely love this story! When you finish, if you read the hard-copy, there's a very cool discussion guide provided in the back of it. If you're inclined to share, shoot me an email on your own thoughts at the end of it. I'd love to hear all about your take on it! Okay, that's it for this one! Hope to see you back on Thursday for the latest edition of femme's Desk. 'Til then, God bless you, thank you for the visit and please don't forget to thank a veteran at your next opportunity! femmeflashpoint
