A old and beautiful private school in Savannah is in big trouble. It's the first and only one of its kind in the U.S., and because of it's unique and very successful approach to educating, it's way less than popular with the authorities who prefer a more controlling and conventional style of education. As grim as the school's future may seem, hope and help often arise during adversity in unexpected places and people, like the four enterprising and dedicated students who have tossed aside their differences and formed a union to save it. They've discovered clues in the dark, twisting and slime coated tunnels beneath Savannah, left by some sly colonial rebels and pirates, one in particular being the famous female pirate, Admiral April Read. Admiral read was definitely unconventional. In a man's world and war, she was responsible for establishing her own fleet of pirate ships, manned by both men and women, that engaged the British in skirmishes along the Southern coastal waters of the New World's colonies. Join Krystal, Odessa, Leo and Mo in their quest to recover Shamus's secret stash! The colonial rebels and their seafaring pirate conspirators tucked away clues in inconspicuous places throughout the the low-country to ensure their treasures were not only hidden from the British but from local looters as well. With their school being on the edge of financial collapse, and undergoing intense pressure from authoritarians with a rabid dislike for free-thinking citizenry, four students take on a quest, combining their varied skills and talents to ferret out the trail and decipher the clues left behind by the colonials. Their goal is to follow the trail, hoping it will lead them to the centuries-old treasure of Savannah's famous indentured servant-turned savvy-survivalist and colorful pirate, the legendary, Shamus Red. It's been rumored for centuries that the courageous pirate's diamond-encrusted eye patch and solid gold peg-leg are hidden somewhere in the low-country along with several other priceless pieces painstakingly tucked away by him and his rebel conspirators. Such a find would not only save their school from closure, but would possibly save the life of a dear friend and colleague whose survival hinges on an expensive medical procedure he can't afford. With his wisdom and gentle guidance, Jah Loko and his faithful and hard-working friend, Hurricane, introduce the four teens to beautiful Savannah, both present and past. The teens work quickly, jumping from from one harrowing experience to another as they do their best to not only protect each other, but stay as many steps ahead as they can of the conniving enemies who are dogging their heels, hoping to permanently silence the teens as well as take the treasure for themselves. It's more than a story ....Co-authors, Dr. Tarrin P. Lupo and Ruby Hilliard, are brilliant in not only putting together a fantastic adventure woven with riveting fact and fiction of Savannah's beautiful and tragic history, but they introduce some amazing cultural concepts that are viable ways of life offering near endless opportunities for success in both educational frontiers and purused careers. Their characters, like the low-country, are rich and depthy, each distinctly unique and yet when bonded form a kaleidoscope of wondrous talents and ideologies that carry them through their quest as they decipher ways to apply their talents and skills to each set of challenges they face. The book is beautifully illustrated by artist Scott A. Motley, and his method of making the illustrations appear to be multi-dimensional adds yet another huge splash of story-telling awesomeness to one of my favorite young-adult books. You can click any of the pictures to get the book from amazon.com and at the time of this writing (5.20.2014), it's TOTALLY FREE in e-book format for your Kindle reader! So, yup ... This book makes for a superb addition to anyone's library, be they a young adult, or a young-adult at heart, and especially if they're the sort who enjoys a great adventure with narrow escapes, engaged in for all the right reasons. Yet again, life proves that bloodlines aren't indicative of nobility. It can sprout up and blossom anywhere, in anyone, at any time in any circumstance.
