"That guy makes the best pecan pies I've ever had!" That's what a local told me after buying and trying one of Herbie's specialties, pecan pie made from pecans he harvests himself near his home in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. So much for retirement... After more than four decades of back and forthing across the U.S. as a truck driver, Herbie Haas is still working. He's traded in his long hours on the road to deliver a different sort of specialty. These days it's baked goods and fresh pecans that he sells personally, both locally and to far away recipients. "I've got customers in Louisiana, Chicago and even Massachusetts," Herbie says. He doesn't mind shipping a bit and will even ship to Canada if a customer requests it. Keeping it simple keeps costs downHerbie's goods aren't available (yet) in a fancy shop, sitting inside a fancy glass, sold by someone wearing a fancy apron and ringing up your purchase on a fancy cash register. He works from much more relaxed venues, which are mostly comprised of Posey County farmers' and artisans' markets. There are loads of reasons to keep things simple, at least in some ways, when it comes to operating an indie biz and one of them is cost. The more cost incurred by the business the higher your price as a customer. Herbie's prices are excellent and that's partly due to low overhead. He works from his home, and resources many of his ingredients locally. If you aren't one of those folks who requires frills in order to interest you in a purchase, Herbie's a quality indie biz to check out and purchase from. I've personally tried a few of his products and they were every bit as good as I'd been told they were. A little or a lotWhen you visit Herbie's booth/station/table (whatever you wanna call it), while they last, some of his goods will be available in large and individual serving sizes. While I visited with him during the interview one customer requested a smaller bag of pecans. Herbie never missed a beat and immediately offered to half the order into another bag. If he's sold out of what you were hoping to buy, he's easy to work with and will take your order, make it then ship it to you or arrange for you to pick it up later if you're a local. Where to find HerbieYou can get acquainted and purchase goods from Herbie by stopping by his stand at the following farmer's and artisans' markets operating seasonally in Posey County, Indiana. New Harmony Farmers' and Artisans Market is open (seasonally) on Saturdays at 0900 and most of the vendors are operating until noon-ish. It's located at 406 Tavern St. in New Harmony, Indiana. Mt. Vernon Farmers' Market is open Tuesday from 1400 (2p) through 1800 (6p) on Fourth Street next to the McDonalds in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Wadesville Farmers' Market is open from 1500 (3p) through 1800 (6p) on Thursdays and is located at 7238 Hwy 66 in Wadesville, Indiana. If visiting him at one of the markets isn't possible, just give him a call at 812.470.7919. Finish Line!My thanks to you for joining me today and for allowing me to introduce you to another participant in the indie biz community.
God bless you, thanks for the read and please don't forget to thank a veteran at your next opportunity! femmeflashpoint

Yummmmm! I love pecans. Herbie's zucchini bread really caught my eye. It looks so moist I can almost taste it. Now that you've awakened my sweet tooth I'm glad I made a peaches and cream pie for my son's birthday yesterday. He opted for pie over cake. Good choice!

Herbie is a great character. I had the pleasure of chatting with Herbie this past spring at a show. He's a flirt, but so friendly and with that great big smile who can resist his charms?! I gave Herbie a recipe for pecan brittle, I wonder if he was selling it? Great post about local folks, I loved it.
