Talking Walls: What do yours say?

Talking isn't limited to walls. It could be your desktop that's speaking. It could be shelving, door-facings or door knobs. Whatever the piece, or where and how you've displayed it, what does it say about you?

Is it indicative of something you love? Is it unique? Does it speak to you, or speak for you? Is it an expression or a depiction of a symbol of something important to you?

I admit to having one piece of mass-produced art, that I purchased myself, hanging on a door in my room-slash-office. I'd replace it with a hand-crafted piece but I've not found one like it yet. However, when I do... ☺

I'm bringing this whole talking-deco thing up because it's my intent and mission to encourage you to consider stepping outside the boundaries of mass-produced deco to enhance your living space, work space, play space, whatever space.

Several weeks ago I visited a new friend's home. They're a collector of some productions by their favorite artist, Elizabeth Scott of Arra Studio, who also happens to reside in their area. Several pieces of the artist's work are displayed throughout their home.

While browsing them, I could understand why this friend enjoyed the artist's work, and appreciated the investment they'd made in not only purchasing the items, but also in the tasteful displays they were mounted in.

One painting in particular has become one of my own new favorites. I love the sweeping strokes and strong-blended-with-misty colors used. Beyond the easier seen and beautiful imagery are the more hidden ones, blended deeper into the scene and not always easily seen at first glace which lended a bit of intrigue and mystery to it as well as additional depth and dimension.

The cherry on the cake was the specific type of trees used in the scene. They're another new personal favorite and I'm missing them since my return from the Sunshine Coast. They don't grow here in the rivers' land.

Domino effect

A couple good things happened when my friend gave me a tour of his residence, and introduced me to the art on his walls. He was able to educate me on why the work is special to him, I got to see how it beautifully enhanced the interior of his home, and I gained knowledge and interest in not only learning more about the artist and her work, but also developed a desire to share it with others, which I'll be doing in an upcoming post, which will hopefully gain this talented painter, and possibly her partner, even more fans.

This is yet another example of an awesome way to interact with and be supportive of one of the most active and prolific sectors of the indie biz community artisans.

Holiday considerations

With the holiday season on the horizon, I hope you'll be considerate of your gifting and put your coin where it can be the most appreciated and beneficial when it comes to your selections.

Maybe instead of a high-end perfume that's loaded with chemicals, you could consider buying a beautifully scented, all natural essential oil based perfume instead?

Desk-caddies, socks, purses, wallets, bowls, plates, cups, pillows, paintings and much more can be easily and affordably obtained within the indie biz community. These items are produced by real artists and craftsmen who take personal pride in their work and beyond loving to see it purchased, so they can earn their living, they especially love knowing it will be actually used and enjoyed. 

It says a great deal to purchase an item produced within the indie biz community for yourself to enjoy but to consider it excellent enough to purchase as a gift for someone else shouts an even louder compliment to the maker.

For holidays, birthdays and just-because-you-care-days, I hope you'll consider the indie biz community first when it comes to gift shopping this year. Your monies will be well spent and much appreciated by both the maker and the receiver.
