Several years ago I made a longish bike trip on a Texas summer day in triple-digit weather. Most of the riding was great. We started early and rode five miles along the Trinity river trail before it turned into Gateway Park in Fort Worth. That was my first visit to Gateway and it was wonderful. My friends and I rode the single track circuits through the beautiful woods there for a good while. Even in 100+℉ temperatures, once under the tall tree canopy, the temp dropped about 20° making our ride shaded and much cooler. Riding the five miles back along the Trinity trail without the tree canopy in the unforgiving Texas sunshine was another story. My hydro-pack had gone dry and I was tiring quickly, riding more and more slowly. Long before we finished the trek, I was so hot, fatigued and parched, I was tempted to ride my bike right into the river and drink it dry. Finally back at the trailhead, I was relieved for the ride to be finished but I didn’t even have the umph to get my own bike back on the rack. One of my pack mates did it for me. They also went in the shop where we stopped on the way home for fluid refills. They came out with the biggest cup of iced diet soda the store sold. I drank nearly the whole thing before I drove out of the lot and headed home. So, imagine your soul feeling that way... This book does much the same for a thirsty soul that the big cup of icy fluid did for my body after the hot ride from Gateway. A compilationThe book is a compilation of short sections. Each section contains an excerpt from books authored by Dr. Billy Graham, Pastor Max Lucado, Anne Graham Lotz and Eugene Peterson. Much of the book targets the holiday season but, it’s like the chilly, sweet well water I grew up on--delicious, refreshing and satisfying all year long. I read this book in an hour. I coulda read it faster but it was so good, I had to savor each graph and chapter before moving to the next one. In John 4:13-15, the scripture reads... …13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.” 15The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”… This book offers that sort of soul nourishment in every section. There are countless folks who feel, and often truly are, isolated, alone, and sometimes even helpless and ill, during the holidays. Not everyone has close friends or family to spend holidays with. Ebooks make awesome affordable gifts for shut ins. If you know folks who fall into that category, I challenge you to consider gifting them something they can draw from over and over again, like this book. I’ve often wished I could supply every resident of a nursing home with a tablet similar to mine. It’s so simple to use and for residents who enjoy reading, there are thousands of free books they could have access to, and others literary diamonds available for very low prices. This one is available on Amazon in Ebook format for only $1.99 and hard copies (paperbacks) start at a little over $1, although shipping may or may not be included. Many readers love real books, including me. But, when living quarters are small, virtual books are a better option. They also work better for folks who can’t get themselves to a shop to buy a hard copy book. Just sayin’... There are some great Android OS tablets out there for under $50 USD that work perfectly for reading and writing. Here’s an RCA Voyager for an example. Tablets come in larger sizes but, after years of using one as a portable workhorse, I’ve found that the 7” screens provide a good viewing area and are much easier to hold while working than larger tablets. They make for quality, affordable stocking stuffers for folks who enjoy reading, writing and other things. There you go--two ideas for holiday (or anytime) gifts, to check out. Also, if you get the book (and I hope you do) and enjoy it, please consider leaving a tiny review of it on amazon for other readers. They’re very helpful. The writers appreciate it as well and the more reviews a book gets, the higher it ranks in Amazon promotions. ShoutOutsAnd last, a vegan chef's channel I subscribe to. She has delicious, easy to prep recipes that you help you to keep the flavor while eating healthy. The wrap! That's it for this one.
God bless you and wishing you a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday (if you celebrate it), and looking forward to seeing you again next week! femmeflashpoint
