Every few years, my birthday (May 27th) merges with Memorial Day. As I have a great love for veterans in general, it makes the day extraordinarily special to me. This year, it happened, and on the last birthday of my 40s, which made it all the more awesome. Another out of the ordinary thing about today's events was that I wasn't in Texas, taking part in the holiday observation at Laurel Land Memorial Park. This year was my first year to cover the event where I grew up, in southern Indiana. As much as I missed my Texas crew today, I have to admit, being here was wonderful. American Legion Post 370 in New Harmony, Indiana starts at 0800 on Memorial Day, making rounds to most of the cemeteries in northern and central Posey County. I contacted them a few days prior asking if they minded if I met up with them to get photos of the final honors event, and to meet some of their post members. Angela Davis answered the phone when I called. She was very pleasant and gave me all the information I needed, and welcomed me to come and get acquainted with them. And so, the following photos are a collage of the day's event, at the Veterans Memorial garden circle, in downtown New Harmony, Indiana. Margaret Blank, with the Post Auxiliary, helped collect the spent shell cases. She presented the one to the right as a gift to me. It's one of the best birthday presents I've ever received. My thanks to the members of American Legion Post 370 for their excellence in service in the Memorial Day event of 2013.
You did a beautiful job, and your dedication is appreciated by many! We're looking forward to getting better acquainted with this group through some follow up articles coming soon. American Legion Posts are in need of public interest and support, and we hope to provide that in upcoming issues. Hope you all had a spectacular Memorial Day observance. For our veterans ... God bless you, and thank you for your service! femmeflashpoint

It is so fine to see the spirit of America alive and well in the heartland of this great country. My hat is off to American Legion Post 370 there in Indiana. Your state produced some excellent regiments in the Civil War( guess my mind is on the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg). After all there wasn't that much difference when it cane down to a farm boy from Ind. and Tenn. after all. Superb pictures taken for posterity, Femme. You really are in the pro leagues with that and your writings. Not to mention what a stand-up lady you are to boot! Bless you.
