Unexpected. Inconvenient. High risk. Consequences.
Adam and Katie were a loving and successful couple. They were about the only family each other had and they were okay with it. They’d been blessed with many caring and supportive friends, and had learned that family isn’t defined by relative characteristics in DNA.
They shared a lovely home. They had achieved success in their careers. They were happy, and Katie, who’d wanted a child for years, finally felt complete, even though she’d never conceived.
And then the day came when she wasn’t feeling well. And, as the symptoms persisted, she decided that although it wasn’t likely, maybe she was pregnant ... ?
What's good news for one...
In her heart-of-hearts, Katie was both ecstatic and concerned. Being in her forties, and pregnant, her doctor advised her of a long list of possible outcomes regarding the health of her baby. The list of good ones was dwarfed by the bad ones.
One of the possibilities that wasn’t on her doctor’s list was Adam’s reaction. He was past his forties, already into his fifties, and the news of a pregnancy was a less-than desired announcement. What had put Katie in a state of wonder and awe had the opposite effect on Adam. The idea of being a father at his age, and thinking he’d had no example of a good father in his own life, left him feeling threatened, frightened and completely inadequate as both a partner to Katie and a father to their child.
For twelve years, Katie had been his significant other. Although, he’d not been of a mind to marry her through most of them because he felt it to be a silly, social statement, didn't mean he didn't love her deeply, or so he'd thought. Katie had accepted that, never pushing him about marriage. They'd grown past the idea and still become a strong and devoted couple, until Katie got pregnant.
Immediately, the peaceful waters of their relationship got choppy and neither was sure of how to handle it. Adam’s felt his world fracture and his love courage too. The thought of a child being born with challenges frightened him. The thought that it might be his own child pushed him over the emotional edge and once he began to fall, for the first time in over a decade, Katie didn't break his fall.
How can the wondrous, miraculous attributes of a child be measured with the soul? Academia has no place in setting such standards because it's a thing that's felt, realized and known only in the soul.
From the moment of her conception, Delilah began thriving, growing to become a soul-reacher. A soul-teacher.
Though she faces challenges, she doesn't meet and overcome them alone. God heard the prayers of her mother. He was responding and moving to assist even before Delilah emerged into the world and drew her first breath.
While she was still growing in her mama’s womb, He loved her, knew all of her delicate intricacies and was already putting things in place, just for her and the lives she would affect, years ahead in her future.
He could see ahead, into those moments when she'd be the vibrant and perfect reminder for others to be grateful; to look for the countless blessings millions of us enjoy every moment of every day that we hang out in this realm called life on planet Earth.
Delilah is a representation of majestic existence beyond the corporeal, insisting others not be limited by their physical senses, but to look deeper, with their hearts, instead.
I’d venture to guess, you can likely remember meeting a Delilah at some point along your own journey. Maybe you passed her by, not realizing she was an emissary intended to stir your soul and open your mind to beyond what your eyes could see..
Please read this book. Maybe in it's story, you can get reacquainted with your own Delilah, and realize the possibilities of the wonderful ways your life can be affected too, When Delilah Smiles.
