In small-town America, Bacon's Corner has been hip-deep in ugly, wicked and deadly little spirits for two decades. There, under the radar, in a rural and out of the way place, the enemy of your soul has been establishing a stronghold.
A big part of its foundation is an elementary school, that has been brimming with busy, susceptible and moldable children for years. Many of them have grown up and made their way into the workforce. They're infected with evil and spreading it like an unseen and unrealized plague.
Step by step they've increased the stronghold's territory. Because of their diligence and dedication, new strongholds are springing up all over the country.
The citizens of Bacon's Corner don't realize it but their future is riding on the actions of one woman, who is fighting tooth and nail for her sanity and to live long enough to put to rights a terrible wrong she committed years ago.
It was her work that laid the footing on which evil was built, and now she's determined to undo it, even if it kills her, which is very likely.
Her name is Sally Beth Roe and she's in dire straits that are getting worse with each mile she travels into enemy territory. Although she's changed her looks and her name, she's finding it hard to hide from the devils that are hot on her heels, sniffing her out and doing their best to capture and kill her before she unravels everything they've worked so hard for.
They lied to her, used and abused her, to build their vicious and corrupt kingdom. For years she was a dedicated slave to their desires, and quick to obey their orders but lately, things have changed.
To their horror, the last blow they delivered, leaving her broken and spent, has caused her to reconsider. Suddenly, she's reviewing and questioning her actions. For all the trauma she's suffered, her spirit is longing for answers that make sense and her soul is thirsting for revival. She's beginning to remember what life was like before she invited a devil into it and let him nearly destroy her.
What Sally Beth Roe isn't aware of are the invisible forces shielding her, guarding her along the path to redemption. Gilded, winged warriors are wielding gleaming swords, striking in her defense, protecting her from what her natural eyes cannot see.
They'll continue to guard her (as much as they're permitted) from the marauding demons sent to stop and destroy her. As long as their prayer cover holds, so will their strength.
Old friends and bitter enemies reunite on the battlefield ...
Destroyer has arrived with his dark forces in Bacon's Corner. They've come to claim and conquer by whatever means necessary.
He's been sent by the Strongman to ensure the defeat of the small remnant of Christian, prayer warriors there and demolish their tiny Christian school and church congregation. He knows if he and his soldiers can discourage them, break apart their prayer chain, cause dissention and disruption in their ranks, they'll turn away from each other. Afterwards, their faith will crumble and the prayer cover, that helps provide the host of Heaven with the strength to protect them, will disintegrate.
But, the wise and battle seasoned general, commander of the Host of Heaven, is no fool. He's deployed the talented and wily Captain Tal, and a large contingent of the best of the best of the best of Heaven's warriors to deal with the trouble that's brewing and on the verge of eruption in Bacon's Corner.
Nothing happens among the saints and their enemies that Tal doesn't notice. He is constantly watching, dispatching and recalling his forces, sending them here and there to carry out plans and provide protection to the saints in his care.
When the small group of Christ's lambs are nearly overcome with emotional distress and physical fatigue, Tal recruits some friends who are nearly as familiar with the enemy's tactics as he is.
To Destroyer's dismay, Marshall Hogan, publisher and photojournalist of the Ashton Clarion, is en route to Bacon's Corner with his wife, Kate. They're acutely familiar with the dangerous evil that is enveloping Bacon's Corner. They also know how to dismantle and defeat it.
If they can unite the prayer warriors of the Christian community, there is hope for not only them, but for the life and redemption of Sally Beth Roe, the rogue pawn-turned tiny warrior, whose fighting with all she's got to undo a lifetime's worth of destruction.
This story has been read and loved, world wide, by well over a million readers. After nearly 30 years since it first published (1986), it's still gaining fans in a steady stream.
These have been in my top five favorite stories' list since I first got acquainted with them in the early 1990. Since then, I've read them over more times than I can remember.
Like Tolkien's heroes, Peretti's good guys will grab at your heart. Within just a few paragraphs, they'll become old friends. Later on, you'll realize you miss them and like many others, will look forward to settling into a comfy spot to rejoin them on their adventures over and over again.

flashPress is a totally free site, but, if you like it and would like to leave a tip, I'll surely put it to good use on things like food, clothes, fuel for my auto, soap to shower with, etc. I think those qualify for seriously good use. ☺
