Lucas is peculiarly gifted. He can move around, over and under obstacles with the strength and grace of a gymnast yet few people have ever seen him employing his myriad of special abilities. One moment he's there, the next gone. A bit like the invisible man, Lucas is frequently mere inches from people who don't see him. They look at him, but they don't see him, in the same way they hear things but don't really listen. He lives for the connection. Those moments when a total stranger locks eyes with him without realizing they're returning someone's gaze. Those moments are his candy. His drug. But please don't confuse Lucas with any run-of-the-mill Peeping Tom or psycho-voyeur. He's a peeper, a peeker, but oddly enough, he's a good guy. Things are not always as they're seen ... To his recollection, he's been without friends or family all his life. Most of his memories of his adolescence, spent in an orphanage, are foggy at best. He's not a trouble maker. He's quiet and keeps to himself, but sincerely kind to people he has to interact with. He's intimately familiar with D.C. in ways others can't imagine -- homeless in the traditional sense, and yet he has homes hidden all over the city. He's a suburban camper, staying in places most people don't realize exist and he never stays in any of them for long. A minimalist, Lucas travels light and moves on before an attachment develops or things get too cozy. Since he left the orphanage, he's lived as a lone wolf in self-imposed seclusion. But, recent events are not only rocking his world, they're threatening to crumble everything his life has been built on. One of those elements is a dream. It's surfaced and clawed it's way out of the memory-mist and has been invading his sleep-time. It's terrifying enough that it's making an impressive dent in his wake-time too. It's very real, very frightening and inexplicably significant, yet he doesn't know why. If it's an omen, it has great timing because Lucas has recently landed in some trouble. Regardless of which part of the city he dives underground in, trouble's been finding him, stalking him, threatening his life and has already claimed the lives of others. The catalyst was a helping hand. Lucas broke his habit, got involved with someone and shortly after, intervened to save a stranger. In preventing what he thought was a tragedy, his actions have gotten a couple of people killed and the death toll keeps rising. It's uncanny how much trouble one can get into by being a good guy -- doing the right thing. Sometimes lending a hand means losing it, and maybe an arm and a leg too. Now the young man with the amazing talent for stealth and athletic prowess has landed in the cross hairs of the type of spooky people most folks would never acknowledge exist, let alone ride next to on the subway. Yes, seems there are monsters afoot, masquerading as average citizens, and they aren't taking much of a liking to Lucas. One of them has gone so far as to snatch Lucas up in his claws and strap a bomb to his ankle. He'll keep resetting the timer as long as Lucas uses his special skills to perform special tasks for him. Tick, tick, tick ...
While he works to defuse the danger, he meets someone who has the keys to his past, to unlocking the dream and allowing him to discover what he really is and where he's come from. The key-holder is called Swarm and he's one of the most deadly people ever invented. Finish Line! That's it for this one! I hope you'll give this book a shot and end up like me, being a fan of the work of T.L. Hines! Please let me know how you like it.
